Lyle Lorne MacLennan
December 1, 1933 — June 28, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lyle Lorne MacLennan, a distinguished veteran and respected Ottawa Fire Chief, who passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 28, 2024, at the age of 90.
He was a devoted son, a loving husband, and a dedicated father, living a life of service and sacrifice. At a young age, Lyle felt a calling to serve his country and enlisted in the military, bravely fighting as a paratrooper in the Korean War. Lyle continued his service by pursuing a career with the Ottawa Fire Department. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, becoming Ottawa Fire Chief in 1982 until his retirement in 1989. His time as Chief saw major improvements in fire safety and emergency response, making Ottawa a safer place for all its residents.
Lyle is survived by his beloved wife of 7 years, Denise; his three children, Bruce (Eleonore Schönmaier), Scott (Michelle Valberg), and Susan (Ross Hines); and his brother, Keith. He is also survived by his grandson, Ben, son of Scott and Michelle, who held a special place in his heart and brought him immense joy and pride. Additionally, by his stepson Gregg Murphy (Julie) and their children Alexa and Madison, as well as his sister-in-law Hélène Lalonde (Glenn Stapledon).
Lyle was predeceased by his loving wife of 47 years, Joan (Dunning), siblings Walter, Cecil, Neil, and sister Marion.
Thank you, Denise Major, the Apple Pie Queen, who supplied him with pies and her friendship for the last few years.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Timothy Cregan for his extraordinary care and compassion to Lyle.
A visitation will be held at the Tubman Funeral Home Garden Chapel, 3440 Richmond Road, Ottawa on Monday, July 8th from 9am until time of Funeral in the Chapel at 11 am. Reception to follow after the service. Private Interment at Pinecrest Cemetery.
